Ogle's Cabin: The First Gatlinburg Historic Site
Around
1802, William Ogle selected a building site for what was to be the
first "home" to be built in Gatlinburg. After cutting the logs for the
cabin, he returned to South Carolina to get his family. He told them
that he had found "The Land of Paradise" in the mountains of East
Tennessee. While preparing to bring his family here, he fell ill,
probably with malaria, and died in 1803.
In 1807, widowed Martha Jane Huskey Ogle, at age 46 or 47, came to her late-husband's "Paradise" with her five sons and two daughters, her brother, Peter Huskey, and his family. From William's oral directions, they located his hewed logs, completed the cabin, and started a new life. Great grandson Andrew Ogle and his family were the last of the clan to live in the cabin, abandoning it about 1910.
The farm was sold to Pi Beta Phi as the settlement school expanded in 1921. They used this cabin as a hospital. From 1922 to 1926, it housed a museum of mountain artifacts. The cabin was moved a short distance away from its original site to the former site of the community's first church building. (Arrowmont Campus on the Parkway)
Pi Beta Phi Settlement School

In the early 1900s, Gatlinburg was still a remote mountain village located in an even more remote Appalachian region where public schools did not exist. In 1910, the alumni of the Pi Beta Phi Fraternity, voted to commemorate their 50th anniversary and honor the founders by providing education to a community where no formal schooling had been available. Although technically called a fraternity, Pi Beta Phi was a national women's organization. It was the first of its kind in the U. S., and had a long-standing tradition of helping others, especially the under-privileged. The provision for basic education was later expanded to include vocational and home economics training for the community's adults. E. E. Ogle, with persuasion from the community, sold 35 acres of land to Pi Beta Phi for the establishment of this school. Many area residents were educated here, and the school's focus on reestablishing and promoting local craft skills helped establish Gatlinburg as a prominent arts and crafts center. Many of its original buildings have been refurbished and are still used today. The school opened in an unused church building in March 1912 with an initial enrollment of 13 students. In 1921, the school expanded by acquiring an additional 35 acres. Today it is known as the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts. (556 Parkway)
First Baptist Church
Religion was important to the settlers and is a large part of the Great Smoky Mountain history. Before they had church buildings, they held services outside or in homes. Although this area was settled by Presbyterians, their first church was Baptist. History records that the White Oak Flats "arm" of the Sevierville Baptist Church convened in the early 1800s on Baskins Creek, probably at the present location of the Ogle cabin. Under the guidance of the Reverend Richard Evans, a second church was built on River Road near the mouth of Mill (now Le Conte) Creek, and in 1837, they formed a new church and called it White Oak Flats Baptist. The congregation met in a log cabin on Baskins Creek, which also served as a school. The first frame church building was constructed in 1875, at the corner of the Parkway and Baskins Creek Road (see historic plaque on the sidewalk). The congregation changed its name to Gatlinburg Baptist Church in 1932; in 1951, they constructed a landmark stone church at the same location. As businesses crowded around them, First Baptist moved to its present location on Highway 321, east of downtown, in 1991.
Ogle Store
Noah Ogle was Gatlinburg's first merchant of record, establishing a store in 1850 on a site that later became the Riverside Hotel. In 1910, he moved the store to the intersection of River Road and the Elkmont Highway. Ephraim E. Ogle took over his father's store around 1916; and until 1925, the E. E. Ogle and Company store housed the Gatlinburg Post Office. Grandson, Charlie A. Ogle, and great grandson, Charles Earl Ogle, continued the family tradition. Through the years the store expanded, spreading out, rambling, and jutting about as new merchandise was added. You could purchase almost anything in that store, from hairpins to threshing machines, "if they could find it." The quaint old general store and adjacent tourist cabins were torn down in the mid 1970s to make way for the Mountain Mall. The Ogles, descended from the area's first settlers, have played a major role in the city's development. (611 Parkway)

James Huskey family
My grandmother was Alice Evelyn
Huskey, youngest of 9 children of James Huskey and Margaretha C.
Briggs. Evelyn, (she didn't like the name Alice) was born 12/19/1913 in
Victoria, MO. James was born 3/7/1872 in Norine, MO. I am looking for
any and all information on James' parents, siblings and ancestors. I
know my grandmother grew up in Jefferson County, MO.
Thanks, Brian Bridwell |

Re: James Huskey family
Brian, Are you sure thats
"Norine" and not "Horine",Mo.? Theres a Horine in Jefferson County, very
near Victoria. I have a marriage, "James Huskey, son of Allen N.and Mary

William,60,and Latitia Huskey,24,John

census has William Huskey,24,Martha
J.,25,James,11,John,9,William,7,ALLEN,3..There are inconsistencys in
ages thru the years, normal. I have Williams will and it names sons
James,John,William and Allen. Also wife,Letitia, who may be 2nd wife. A
note on the will, written by a researcher, says William was son of John
and Rachael Huskey. They were my 3rd GGParents. John died 1822 and was
son of Peter Huskey, who also died in JeffCo,1818. E-mail me and I'll
send you some pages. There are 2 Briggs probates in archives at
Jefferson College, #1699,Henry Briggs and #3424,Susan Briggs. You can
get them by writing. I found an obit for Susan; "Briggs,Susan, died
August 30,1909,age unknown. The funeral was held beneath the trees and
among the flowers she loved so well. She was buried in the little home
cemetery beside her husband and two children who died some years
ago"...Al

Re: James Huskey family
Heres a little more.
Hannah/Mary was probably a Null by birth. In 1860 JeffCo census,Joachim
Twsp., #1212, theres a Hannah,8, listed as oldest child of the
William.Jr. and Mary(Ogle) Null family. Theres a JeffCo marriage for
William Null and Mary Ogle,31 Mar.1852. This would fit correctly with
age given on census as Nov.,1852. I believe this Wm.,Jr. was probably
son of William and Sarah Ann(Metz) Null,m.1 Sep.1831,JeffCo.. The
marriage record refers to him as "Jr.", so there may be another William
in the line. In 1850 JeffCo census theres a William H.,16,listed as son
of William and Sarah Ann Null. Your Allen Huskey may have been a Civil
War vet. Theres a cemetery listing of "A.N.Huskey,no years,Co.B,47th
Inf." Let me know if this helps, Al

Re: James Huskey family
Al,
It is in fact Horine, MO. And this is iformation I have been searching for! Thank you VERY much!!! What else do you have? Thanks again! Brian |

Re: James Huskey family
I may have a little more
Brian, let me look in my files. You may have some real pioneers of very
early Mo.in your roots. If all this works out I can tell you, the Nulls
were here even before Huskeys came to JeffCo, in 1809. The Metz were one
of the earliest. The Ogles came along with Huskeys, but probably had a
relative, Cap.Joseph Ogle,(who Ogle Co.,Ill.is named for),as a 'point
man'. Huskeys and Ogles lived for a short while in Southern Illinois
before crossing the Mississippi River to Mo..Peter Huskey's sister was
married to William Ogle. Theres a pretty good genforum site for Ogles.
Now don't get too excited. This all needs more research before
verifying. But I think you're gonna find some true American pioneers in
your heritage. E-mail me at alhusk@webtv.net and I'll send you pages. Glad you enjoyed, thats what its all about, Al

Cherokee Bloods in HUSKEYS of SEVIER COUNTY, TN
Cherokee Bloods in HUSKEYS of SEVIER COUNTY, TN
Still currently working to find
more documentations to prove the family tradition(s) in Huskeys of
Sevier County, Tennessee that they are "Kin" to Cherokee Indians. Also I
have recently discovered the Cherokee Indian records at U. S. Archives
in Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas that Huskeys in Sevier County, Tennessee in
1896 have filed to apply for an citizenship in Cherokee Indians Nation.
All citizenship application papers by various Huskey families, various
Whaley families, and Ogle families of Sevier County, Tennessee have been
rejected by Dawes Commission in late 1890's for unknown reason. But
sworn statements in the citizenship application papers have strongly
supported and verified the family traditions in the Huskey family
history that I am currently updating. The Huskeys, Whaleys and Ogles who
filed for the citizenship in Cherokee Indians Nation are children,
grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of pioneer settlers who came to
White Oak Flats (now Gatlinburg, Tennessee), Sevier County, Tennessee in
early 1800's from Edgefield County, 96th District, South Carolina.
I am inclined to believe that PETER HUSKEY Sr. was truly an Scotch-Irish man and an Indian trader with Cherokee Indians Nation in 18th Century (1700's). Was his wife an "one-half Cherokee Indians by Blood"? If so, then I would like to have a record about it. This PETER HUSKEY Sr. and his family were living in Frederick County, Virginia and Rowan County, North Carolina during that time. The children of PETER HUSKEY Sr. were, indeed, "one-fourth Cherokee Indian by Blood" per sworn statements in citizenship application papers. For the family history on the children of PETER HUSKEY Sr., it can be located in two genealogical publications, SMOKY MOUNTAIN CLANS, Volume 1, Revised Edition, and THE BOOK OF RAGAN/REAGAN. Will appreciate in hearing about this "interesting" Cherokee Indians ancestry in the Huskey, Whaley, and Ogle families of Sevier County, Tennessee. You can contact me at snail address, Donald B. Reagan, 801 Henrietta Drive, Knoxville, Tennessee 37912-3627; or at email address, dbrbear@BellSouth.Net. |

Huskey Family
Hello:
Visited your message board today and think we could be related somewhere down the line. My grandmother was Leona Huskey from Swain County, NC. Her parents were Seveir (?)Huskey and Kate Cline Huskey. We know that her (Leona) grandfather fought in the civil war (on the southern side of course!). Do you have any other information that you could share with the family?? You can reach us by the e-mail address: PHATDUMBHPE@cs.com Thank you for your time...... Sincerely, A Branch of the Huskey family |

Hey, Donald what a surprise
to find you. This is Phillip Ogle from Atlanta, Ga. Though I just moved
to St. Pete fl. a year ago. I am gald you are tracking down the Indian
connection. I have always been most curious about that old
family"legend" I had seen on the smokymountainkin site that someone had
listed Peter Huskey's wife name as a Rebecca Washington, so I was
wondering what documentation had been found to substantiate this info. I
know obviously you are still working hard at the Smoky Mt. geneology. I
miss the Smokies down here it is kind of flat for we "mountain folks"
but you can't complain about the weather. I hope to hear from you and
good luck on the Indian trail! Do you have any new books out? I would
certainly like to purchase any copies if you do. Take care Cuz. Phillip

Huskey Family Name
I am and have been for some
years now researching my true family history. I would greatly appreciate
any info anyone can provide. My grandfather "Deadrick Huskey" is son of
"John and Della Rosa Huskey". The hail from Sevier Co. From the info I
have gathered, "John Huskey" was part Cherokee Indian. Deadrick was born
around Jan. 25, 1920 in Tennessee. Deadrick had several brothers and
sisters, Verle, Bessie, Hazel, and so on. Deadrick married an "Opal
Dunlap" somewhere around 1945, divorced shortly there after and
remarried a woman named "Geneva". I am in desperate need of some help in
this matter. Any info anyone could provide would be GREATLY
appreciated. You can email me at bubbaluther@hotmail.com

reply to Patricia Huskey Rios
Dear Patricia: The
Huskey ancestry comes from Ireland. in my limited geneology search
Thomas Huskey from Down, Ireland was the earliest ancestor I've found.
His birthdate is listed as 1657. Perhaps others have more information.
Mr. Reagan's family tree report from Sevierville, TN. is also my
ancestry. as I am descended from Peter Huskey and my
great-great-grandfather was William Huskey who immigrated to the
Jackson, MO. area after he served in the Union army. My grandfather was
Thomas Herbert Huskey who died in Marble Hill, Mo. in 1962. Hope this
helps.

I have found
no other
George Huskey on tax list or census records in the 1840?s in Macoupin
County, Illinois.
Kathie: I believe there is another George Huskey in the area. He may or may not be related. He could be tax exempt because of age or other reason, and he could be living in another household and thus not on the 1840 census.

Good Evening
This naming is a little less restrictive than some have indicated. It is
indicative that an older George Huskey is in the same area--not necessarily a
relative. He is just named George Huskey.
Often you may see a person listed as John Rakes who lives on the hill or
John Rakes the livery keeper. I am sure you get the idea.
Since they had no other way to separate two men of the same name they would
use age as a first cut.

Kathie,
Douglas is certainly right that the other person wouldn't necessarily have
to be a relative. If the term wasn't used to distinguish him from a
relative, then you'd be more likely to find the other George in the same
vicinity. I wonder if the "other" George was someone who wasn't enumerated
as a head of household before 1850 but then died before the 1850 census.
There was nine years between when the deed was signed and 1850.

My question is - what is the name of James Huskey's Father or
Grandfather. They may refer to an older George Huskey that may not be
relevant to the area, but because of his place in the family - he
would be the older George but not part of the immediate family James/
George the younger relationship but be James Father or grandfather?
And may not currently live in the area at that time.

All other reference to George Huskey is ? George Huskey the younger.
What
does ?the younger? mean?
George Huskey was their eldest son, born 25 Jan 1818 in Perry County,
Alabama and died 01 Nov 1882 in Greene County, Illinois. I have found
no other
George Huskey on tax list or census records in the 1840?s in Macoupin
County, Illinois.
Thanks for any help,
