About 1825, JOHN and his family were among the earliest settlers of Florida during the Territorial Period, moving across the St. Marys River into what is now Nassau County and residing there until after 1840, even though he evidently maintained his residence in Camden as well. JOHN continued his public service role as a Justice of the Peace in Nassau Co. during 1827. Both JOHN and his son Reuben were among the signers of the Petition for Division of Territory, which led to the partition of Nassau Co. out of Duval. JOHN served as a private in Thigpen’s Company, Florida Mounted Militia during the Indian Wars and was awarded bounty land for his service. JOHN was evidently a caring family man; he once bought a herd of cattle from his son-in-law, Lewis Daniels, then essentially gave them back to his daughter Mary Ann a month later.
